Flexography is a form of letter press printing. The ink is applied to the raised part of the print plate and is then directly transferred onto the substrate. The amount of ink transferred is determined by the anilox roller used. The print plates are made of a flexible polymer, which is where the word ’flexography’ comes from.
Desmedt is one of the first label manufacturers in Europe to have received the HD Flexo Certificate. And yet we still felt like we should take things up a notch. We developed an even higher standard to put on the market: Ultra HD Flexo.
Ultra HD Flexo technology takes flexography to unprecedented heights in terms of quality with: sharper images, stronger contrasts, clearer and more intense colours, flowing colour gradient to 0%, additional evening out of solids in the white or bright areas, etc. Thanks to the Ultra HD Flexo technology, flexography achieves a quality that’s higher than offset and digital printing and that matches that of gravure printing.
For screen printing, ink is pressed through a mesh screen (hence the name) using a squeegee. The screen contains a stencil with permeable and impermeable areas, which either allow ink to pass through or block the ink.
Screen printing’s unique options and advantages
Screen printing involves fairly thick layers of ink. It is this aspect of the printing technique that opens up unique options and advantages:
With digital offset printing, a laser removes parts of the image on a photosensitive plate. These parts will pick up ink, which is then transferred to a rubber blanket. All of the different colours for the label are added layer by layer on the rubber blanket and then transferred onto the material to be printed in one go.
As we manage the coating of the substrates in-house, we can digitally print on virtually all materials possible at Desmedt.
Advantages of digitally printed labels
Cold foil printing is a printing technique that relies on specially developed foils and adhesives. First, adhesive is applied to the image to be printed, after which this foil is nipped to the substrate. Once dry, the foil is immediately removed, while the nipped foil remains on the substrate.
Ultra HD Cold Foil provides unprecedented quality, rendering every detail exceptionally crisp and clear.
This technology relegates the expensive bronze or copper cylinders for hot foil printing to the annals of history. And the result? A low fixed cost.

Hot foil printing is a printing technique that prints hot foil onto your label. The foil is applied to the raised parts of a copper cylinder and is then transferred to paper using heat.
